Tom Blount U11s joint Top Scorer 07-08

The 2008-09 League teams are again performing very well after 3 CVL meetings so far. A small squad of 8 players have represented the U11s (inc 4 new players: Cody Parton: Luke Oliver; Cameron Wildblood & Owen Jones this season) and 9 have played for U13s (inc 2 new players this season: Murdock Bradbury & Ben Black).

Striving to build on the success of the previous two seasons, the current teams continue to impress and look set to keep the Strettons flying high in the Three Counties Central Venue League at Leominster. In the last two seasons the new club fielded two teams in the league and astonished everyone with miraculous success as in both years the Stretton boys won the U13 league, and the Stretton Juniors mixed team came runner-up in the U11 league.

This season is showing early signs of another excellent performance. Both teams are enjoying their current level of success and hope to keep up the good performances until the league is completed in April. This is still a tall order for the Stretton youngsters who are facing opponents from long established, bigger clubs such as Ross-on-Wye, Leominster, Telford, Hereford and Ludlow. Furthermore the Stretton Juniors do not really train as a club or even as individual teams but only come together for the league matches with no preparation. With no proper hockey training facilities in the Strettons, not even a goal to shoot at, the Juniors have at least one arm tied behind their backs when they meet their league rivals. Making the best of every opportunity to get on a real pitch the Juniors have to learn fast from the coaches and the match play situations.

MAGNIFICENT SEVENS

Seven-a-side over seven sessions - what a remarkable first season for the newly formed hockey club, Stretton Juniors, based in Church Stretton and supported by the Church Stretton Area Partnership and Church Stretton Round Table. Not only was the formation of the club a great success but the two club teams representing the Strettons have proven their worth and brought back some recognition for the area. Playing in the Three Counties Central Venue Junior 7-a-side Hockey League at Leominster (Shropshire, Herefordshire & Worcestershire) the young hockey players have developed skills, strength and style over the course of the season.

U13s WIN THE LEAGUE & CELEBRATE AT LEOMINSTERStretton Stars

Following 24 matches from October through March the under 13 boys dug in deep to win 19 matches, drawing two and losing only three with an amazing 20 clean-sheets over the season. Incredibly the team conceded only 12 goals and scored 71, Captain James Pratt leading the way with 19 goals to secure the Champions spot and win the League with points to spare. Awards were presented by Nisar Chaudhry the new regional Hockey Development Officer.

A much closer affair at the top of the Under 11s league saw the Stretton Juniors playing a gruelling 37 matches during the season. Over the league campaign the team only lost 4 games, drawing 10 and winning 23, also conceding only 11 goals and scoring 67 with skipper Jake Watts leading his troops with a staggering 26 goals. At the final meeting the title could have gone Stretton’s way. In the end if Stretton had scored one more goal against Kingsland or Wigmore (or conceded one less), or if Ludlow scored one more against Kingsland it would have given Stretton the title, but with two key players absent it was not to be, and the Championship concluded with Stretton taking a very creditable runners-up position.

I am now looking at hockey opportunities over the summer and turning my thoughts to next season as I start recruiting more players. I want to encourage local children to keep coming to the Monday hockey coaching sessions from 4-5pm at Stretton School (continues to June 11th inc.) so that they might share in the success of Stretton Juniors Hockey Club next season.

Thanks to all parents for continued time, transport and support -
and Kevin Blount Assistant Coach/Manager.
